Our Mission

Food Stash Foundation has a two fold mission: to rescue food from producers and suppliers that would have been destined for the landfill, and to deliver edible food items to charities, as well as food-insecure households and individuals in Vancouver. By doing so, we seek to reduce the environmental impact of food waste and address food insecurity within our community.

Our Vision

Our vision is a thriving society where all, regardless of income and ability, have access to nutritious food that supports overall health and well-being without compromising our environment.

Our Values

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, roughly 1/3 of the food produced globally is wasted somewhere along our current food-chain. The greenhouse gases emitted by food waste have been identified as a major contributor to climate change and global warming - decomposing food emits methane, a common greenhouse gas.

What is food security? Food Security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences, for an active and healthy life. Food Insecurity is defined as the inability to acquire or consume an adequate diet quality or sufficient quantity of food in socially acceptable ways, or the uncertainty that one will be able to do so.”

food insecurity: The numbers in british columbia

The average cost of a nutritious food basket for a family of 4 in BC is $1,019/month.

1 in 6 children in British Columbia are living in a food insecure household.

1 in 10 households in British Columbia experience food insecurity.

This means that approximately half a million people in BC worry about feeding themselves and their family before the next pay cheque, which increases the likelihood to run out of food, skip meals, cut portion sizes, and even go days without eating because of the financial and physical challenges to accessing nutritious food.
