Nancy

Whoever volunteers with Nancy knows that she brings an electric energy and music choices to all her shifts. As a freelance writer she is fortunate enough to have the flexibility to join us almost every Monday, and our team greets her curiosity and speed with open arms. Originally from a small farming town, she developed her deep understanding and appreciation for the journey our food undergoes

Why She Comes Back

Nancy loves that the staff and volunteers share the same mindset that is driven by a respect for food. She enjoys leaving her shifts knowing that she’s made a positive impact within her community, and although Nancy is normally part of the sorting shifts,  she also took the opportunity to deliver rescued food boxes during the pandemic. Delivering food boxes gave Nancy the chance to meet some of our members (from a distance) and experience such generosity and appreciation from them.

Most Memorable MomentS

Since Nancy has been volunteering with Food Stash for nearly two years, she has a lot of fun memories to share. Such as when she and the other volunteers made up songs while sorting rescued vegetables. Another aspect of the volunteering that keeps Nancy coming back is discovering new foods, like Rosé Strawberries, which are a hybrid of golden and red strawberries and have a lovely sweet flavour.

We love that Nancy is able to share her time, energy and passion for food waste reduction with us. As she puts it:

“I know what it takes to grow a Zucchini and it’s a long process that requires care. The idea that the zucchini went from a seed, and finally made the journey to a store, but no one purchased it, so it goes into the compost - that is just not the story I want to know.”

Without dedicated volunteers like Nancy, we wouldn’t be able to help as many individuals as we do. Thank you Nancy, for your years of dedication to Food Stash!
