Who Is Food Stash Foundation?
Food Stash Foundation is a registered charity established in 2016 to prevent good food from going to waste and provide dignified food access to promote a thriving planet and a healthy community. We rescue over 140,000 pounds of surplus perishable food a month from 35 local grocery stores and wholesalers.
About 80% of this nutritious food goes to our 51 community-serving partners, while the remaining 20% is provided directly to community members through weekly Rescued Food Box home deliveries, a Rescued Food Market serving an average of about 127 people per week, and a 24/7 open-access Community Fridge and Pantry.
For us, rescuing food is a key way to protect the environment. Every pound of food we pick up and provide to the community reduces waste and helps fight climate change. In 2025, GHG Accounting confirmed that our work prevented 108 tonnes of net CO₂ equivalent emissions. And we’re continuing to push ourselves to do even more.
As we move into our 10th year of operations, Food Stash Foundation remains committed to rescuing good food and getting it to people who need and appreciate it. Food insecurity continues to affect more people and families across Vancouver. We know that poverty is at the root of this expanding problem, and that the rising cost of living is putting added pressure on households and community organizations alike.
At the same time, large amounts of perfectly-good food are still going to waste because of a food system built on the commodification of food, and issues like strict cosmetic standards for fruits and vegetables and misunderstanding of best-before dates. (Best-before doesn’t mean bad after!) We see both an urgent need and a powerful opportunity: to rescue valuable food, deepen our partnerships and collaborations, and together, build a food system that works better for people and the planet.
